Artist

I've been looking at various artists. I've been trying to work out the secret of incorporating found objects into embroidery without them looking too self conscious or out of place.

Keri Smith - uses various items related to this module to make collages. For example, using airmail paper. The secret here seems to be to use muted colours, possibly using a colour wash to tone down bright colours or perhaps using paper which has yellowed naturally. The older the item the more likely it is to blend in. Also use of soft edges - tearing paper rather than cutting it.

Sara Lechner - collages, books, incorporates found objects

Sara Lechner mixed media example. Masses of small objects and images to create an overall effect of a mosaic. Nothing is isolated and again the colours are muted.

Jade Pegler - website/blog/flickr - fantastic paper creations. This is more about using recycled paper - I love what she does with paper so I included it here!

Janet Cooper- recycled art. Figures made from tin cans. Lots of bright colours. Probably appeals because the tin canss she uses aren't familiar and look exotic.

Judith Hoffman. Fantastic books and other items made from all sorts of things! Every thing used looks old or is made to look old. The text and items are made to look part of the background. Again colours are muted and paper is torn to give soft edges.

The key features to using found objects/images seem to be:

  • collage

  • tear paper

  • Tone down

  • Placement with other objects
